Arranging Bookcases Like the Professionals!

arrange bookshelf, rearrange accessoriesHave some bookcases that look cluttered and disarrayed just like this one? Don't know what to do? Bookcase arrangement can be fun and is an important part of the decorating of any room where they exist. Don't neglect this space or arrange it poorly. It's not that difficult.

Before we discuss what to do with them, let's first discuss what NOT to do with them. Here is a brief list of some of the types of things you'd best put out of sight and not on a bookcase shelf: telephone books, loose papers or magazines, storage boxes (unless they are decorative), photograph albums, CDs, video tapes, cassette tapes, anything else that is messy or unattractive.

Obviously, making a full row of books on a shelf or several shelves is expected -- the library look. This is a great look. It's hard to beat the look of books lined up neatly. It creates a warm, inviting and cozy atmosphere. One feels compelled to sit down and read. But keep this in mind. Unless you have a huge number of books, of all different titles, colors and subjects, try to use on the books that have colors that blend with the room where you are placing them. Otherwise they will stick out like a sore thumb and attract too much attention. Take the dust covers off and display them in all their rich linen and gold lettering glory.

Place paperback books together and do not mix them in with hard bound books. Put the largest and tallest books on the bottom shelves to anchor the bookcase. Vary the heights with the tallest books in the middle of the shelf and don't place tiny books next to tall books. Descend in gradual increments. Putting a row of encyclopedia books that are all one color and style on a bottom shelf is a great way to anchor the bookcase. It also brings a lot of unity with the repetition of the books.

If you don't have enough books to fill the entire case, put the books on the bottom shelves and leave the upper shelves for accessories. If you mix accessories and books on the same shelf, try to make the books the dominant theme and not the other way around.
