Fall Decorating Tips

I've talked about using fall colors for your fall decorating plans. Orange, of course, is a big fall color, in part because of Halloween and pumpkins, but also because the leaves turn golden as colder weather sets in.

Try adding some purple or blue colors to the mix, complementary colors to the orange and yellow that are typically used in this season. Too much neutral color can get boring. So add some drama with splashes of color not usually thought of as being a fall decorating color.

Bring in a large branch and prop it up against the wall in a corner or stick it in a tall vase or basket. This is a great look, rustic, natural and unexpected. Branches with no leaves are not messy and suggest that winter is right around the corner. For a more festive look at night, string small white lights on the branch and let this be a pre-cursor to Christmas. Or place a bird's nest on one of the branches.

Visit your garden center or farmers market and get an assortment of pumpkins and gourds in different sizes. Arrange them in a grouping in front of your home. Pick up some old fruit crates and some straw or hay to scatter around. Get some pots of blooming mums in assorted fall colors to mix into the grouping. Add a scarecrow. Make your own or buy one at the store. The display will look colorful for weeks, making your children happy every day upon returning from school. Then you'll also have the main ingredients when you get ready to make those pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving.
