Don't Neglect to Decorate Your Exterior Rooms Too
Make sure the outside of your home is decorated and inviting too. When a winter storm knocked down
the overgrown tree in the front yard of this home, the owners knew it was time for a change. A
neighbour, who cuts trees for a living, cut down the three trees as a courtesy. Then the owner,
using the strategies and decorating concepts
in Decor Secrets Revealed, designed her own landscape. Instead of removing the stumps of the
trees, she left the stumps in the ground and used them like shelves. She brought soil up around the base of the two front stumps,
planted daisies and fountain grass around the stumps, them placed additional plants in wooden
containers and set them on the stumps. She also gathered up as much of the scattered river rock
as she could find, and tossed it into a simulated stream running through the middle of the garden.
By using the concepts of interior design,
such as balance, repetition, unity, variety, color, proportion and scale, she coordinated the
plants and flowers to create a spectacular and truely unique landscape. Many motorists and pedestrians
and stopped to admire the finished product. By using her own creativity, which sort of flies in the
face of most professional gardners, she was told by a neighbour that she had the most beautiful and
interesting yard in the neighborhood.
To make her entry more spectacular and interesting, she is the only one in the neighborhood to hang plants
from the wood plank that runs along her garage. For under $100 she turned the entry to her front door
into a spectacular hanging garden, using materials from Home Depot and artificial flowers and greenery.
Of course, the more adventurous garden designer might opt for real plants, but then think of the difficulty
of watering and pruning them. Fortunately for this homeowner, she lives in a warm to mild climate
and the plants get shade most of the day. Anyway, I show you this to stimulate your creative juices
for your outside "rooms" as well as your "inside" rooms. What can you do with your home to give it
more and better curbside appeal?
