Regarding the Photo Selections on CDs

Redesign is not about your taste nor mine. It's about working with what the client owns and making them happy.   You may find you do not care for some of the 138 selections included in the CD or don’t understand them.

Re-designers cannot afford to be judgmental about their client’s possessions.  Their job is to work with what the client already owns, create a home environment and space that appeals to them, that is functional and more attractive than when they arrived – that’s all.

If you convey judgment about their belongings, they will pick up on it and dislike you for it. They certainly will not recommend you to anyone.  If you convey judgment about the quality of home or quality of furnishings that the homeowners views in the slideshow, you will make your prospect fear that you will be judgmental of what they own.  Many will be too embarrassed to have you visit their home as a result and you will not be hired.

Lastly, pictures never do any room justice.  Whether they are these pictures or your own pictures, you will soon discover that one really needs to be “in” the room to fully appreciate the transformation.  Be sure your prospects understand in advance the wide variety of rooms they will preview and that you merely want them to “experience” partially what a re-designer does and how it can benefit just about anyone.

The selection of pictures that were chosen for the CD reflect this reasoning. We wanted to reflect all income levels.  We wanted to include a wide variety of styles.  We wanted to reflect a wide range of ages.  You see homeowners from mid twenties to late eighties.  From old historical landmarks, to apartments, to low middle class, to upper middle class, and at least one multi-million dollar home.

The point is, no matter where a person lives, no matter what they have or don’t have, no matter their age, redesign is for everyone – re-designers must not make value judgments on what people own.

The point is not to have people see a home or style that appeals directly to them (we’re not selling the furnishings these people own) – nor to see only homes of the rich which they can’t relate to anyway - the point is to see that redesign can make a very nice improvement to a room no matter what the style, income level, age, taste, type of furnishings, age of furnishings, etc.

Finally, the point is for anyone and everyone to INSTANTLY recognize what it is that a re-designer actually does. This is best done with before and after pictures of a wide variety of rooms, yes even a hall.  It encourages them to think about having someone redesign the WHOLE home, not just a single room.

You need to tell your clients that this CD is merely to give them an idea of what a re-designer does and to show that everyone can benefit from a professional arrangement service.  It was never intended to “showcase” expensive homes that most of us dream about but never are able to own.

Always remember, this is “re-design” – not full service design.

It is imperative that you let all your prospects know that you make no value judgments of any kind – that you just want to help them get more enjoyment out of their apartment, condo, or home and the furnishings they already have – nothing more.  If you fail to convey that, you will not succeed as a re-designer.

These CDs show a re-designer's ability to work with any room, no matter how lavishly furnished nor how poorly furnished.  It is important to show versatility.  We are not the judge of what they own.  We merely arrange it in a better way for them to help them enjoy their home more and give them some guidance along the way regarding other decorating choices they may face.
