Mold Attack and
What You Should Do!
Get the sniffles and it's not a cold?
Wonder what's growing outside that's causing you to wheeze and sneeze? The
culprit may be something other than you think!
If you suffer from allergies and asthma, controlling common household molds
could be a key step to feeling better. While it's impossible to keep mold out
of your home, since it comes in through windows and doors or may be tracked
in by you and your family members, the challenge is to keep it from
colonizing all over your home.
A recent study discovered that mold flourishes, often in place you'd least
expect. Here are some interesting statistics: on 88% of windowsills, on 83%
of refrigerator seals, under 82% of sinks and on 49% of shower grout.
TOXIC MOLDS
One toxic mold that has made recent headlines is "black mold",
otherwise called Stachybotrys Chartarum. It typically grows in dark,
hidden places such as under carpets and behind your walls. And exposure to
black mold is linked to some serious health effects. If you discover that you
have a black mold problem, do not try to remedy the situation yourself. Get a
professional to do it for you.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PREVENT MOLD BUILD-UP
These are recommendations from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of
America:
- Keep
your humidity levels below 40%.
- During
humid months, use an air conditioner or dehumidifier, especially in the
rooms you most use.
- Allow
for good ventilation.
- Don't
put carpeting in your bathrooms and basements.
- As
soon as you find moldy things or materials, get rid of them immediately.
- Use
mold-killing products, like Tilex Mold and Mildew Remover, to clean your
hard surfaces. Have nonsensitive people do the cleaning. Be sure to use
good ventilation.
THE RIGHT WAY TO CLEAN
Defense against mold build-up is to clean your home regularly. Look for the
right product for you at your super market and use it regularly. Always read
the instructions and warnings carefully and obey them. If you suffer from
allergies or asthma, be sure to have someone else use the products to clean.
