Getting Rid of Home Odors
We all know
you can mask odors with scented candles and sprays. But here are some other cool tips to help you make sure every room in your home has a clean, fresh fragrance.
Cooking Tricks
- Place a small bowl of white vinegar on the stove while cooking to absorb odors.
- Sprinkle salt on over-spills and drips to absorb the burned smell while still cooking. Clean up will be easier later as well.
- Fill a clean sock with dry coffee grounds and place inside a smelly freezer.
- Burn your microwave popcorn? The smell lasts forever it seems. Speed up the removal process: fill a large bowl with 1-1/2 cups water and 3-4 chopped lemons.
Add a fragrant spice (cloves). Boil in a microwave-save bowl in the microwave. Leave bowl to steam inside for 15 minutes. Remove when water is cool and safe to do so.
Leave door to microwave open for an hour or so to air it out.
Garbage Tricks
- Wash your indoor and outdoor trash cans with hot soapy water. Remove debris first. Put new roll of bags in the bottom
where they will be handy.
- Put a couple of used fabric softener sheets in bottom of kitchen trash can or compactor to absorb odors.
- Throw some lemon or lime rinds in that stinky garbage disposal while it's running. Then run lots of water through it.
Pet Tricks
- Your pet smelly? Lightly powder the pet with baking soda, rub it in and brush it out.
Bathroom Tricks
- Toilet odors? Pour 1 cup of household vinegar into the bowl. Let it sit for five minutes. Scrub with toilet bowl brush and flush.
- Dab some essential oil (orange or cinnamon) onto cotton balls. Put them on a small dish on a shelf.
- Place some matches in pretty container near toilet for quick fix.
Carpet Tricks
- Sprinkle baking soda over stinky rug and let settle into the fibers for 30 minutes. Vacuum.
- If you use vacuum bags, drop in a cotton ball dabbed with some bergamot essential oil (get at drugstore). Great fragrance.
Car Tricks
- For a continual deodorizer, fill ashtrays with 1/2 cup baking soda.
