The Home Office:
Create a Special Home Office!
No matter what type of business you have, working
at home or from a home base is a unique and wonderful experience. The trick is designing the office
to fit in with the style of the home and, most especially, the room where it will be placed.
Look at the style and colors that you're decorating with and go from there. Make your home office
just business like enough to keep you focused when you're working, but also look for ways to
make it "fit" into the home without screaming out at you that it's an office. Seek to blend the
two concepts together, giving your office a sense of importance yet emotionally acknowledging that
it is, after all, in your home.
A weaver has beautifully incorporated her large loom into
an alcove in the family room. The architecture of the room has nicely divided the room, making it
a separate unit, sort of a room within a room. To make the best utilization of space, she has also
added her keyboard at one end. The room is unique and interesting, as well as functional for her business
and hobbies.
Even a woodworker's bench looks at home in this
casual, country style home. Organized and neat, it does not detract from the enjoyment of the
rest of the space. The key here is organization. If you tend to be messy in your work, this
type of arrangement should be placed in a spare bedroom or garage, not in a public room.
The traditional roll top desk adds charm to the home and hides the clutter of paying bills or other
light office-type duties. Bargains can often be found at garage sales, estate sales and flea markets or
second hand stores. If you've got the knack for some sanding and buffing and staining, you can really
be functional and decorative at the same time.
