Decorating Your Patios
I neglected my backyard altogether when I was younger, thinking that I wouldn't use it much anyway. But now that I have put some quality thought into
decorating my backyard, I've been amazed at how often I do use it, especially during the warmer months of the year.
Backyards are no longer just a place for swing sets or barbeques or a storage bin for outdoor tools. As we become more cramped in our homes, just because we are
staying in them longer, we are starting to think of our patios as another room. No matter what goal you have for your patio, or entire backyard for that matter, you can turn it into
anything you want that suits your lifestyle and needs.
This can include an entertainment area. It can become a private retreat or a place to sunbathe. It can become an alternative office for those of us that work at home.
It's a great place to read. It's a great place to think and plan. I use mine for brainstorming for my business. When I get upset at some aspects of business or family life, I
aways feel better outside with God's beautiful creation all around me. So whether you want a place to share with family and friends or merely a place to relax by yourself,
you can and should show your own style outside as well as inside.
Here are some simple tips to help you do just that.
Start by choosing a theme: a European village, a mountain hideaway, a Caribbean island, botanical garden spot, an Asian meditation place. Make it an extension of a
vacation you took that was thoroughly enjoying.
Add color to the environment. Use colorful, flowering plants everywhere: in the ground, in pots, hanging from railings, in window boxes, hanging on the fence. Choose
containers that blend into the style and decor you have chosen: ceramics, wagons, metal boxes, wooden boxes, baskets, old boots. Put some plants on the ground or
cement; place others on stands of various heights. Group like kinds together for more impact.
Paint the fence, or a side or back wall. Use a contrasting color from the green foliage and flowers for more dramatic effects. Paint the surface of outdoor furniture with
colors that either contrast or blend with the palette of choice.
Coordinate your chair cushions, table cloths, umbrellas, florals just as you would inside. Incorporate at least 3-4 colors. Add patterns to the area with the fabrics you
choose. Assemble an assortment of textures to add more interest.
Add additional fencing to block off areas that are not pleasing to the eye. Hide those tools in the garage or a tool shed. Decorate around the shed to make it more
To personalize the area, add handcrafted accessories you've made yourself. Or buy them. Choose a variety of textures such as fabric, wood, metal. Mix up the surfaces
such as smooth, rough, patterned or solid.
Consider adding such elements as: sculptures, stakes, low fencing, weathervanes, a bird feeder, chimes, flags, lamps, solar lights. Even such things as old
buckets, stepladders covered with flowering plants, waterning cans, weathered furniture can add a unique look and feel. Add something humorous to the mix. Have your
children or grandchildren make a craft for outdoors to personalize it even further.
Here is a brief list of other things you can add: trellis, stepping stones, garden arbors, canopies or gazebos, a birdhouse, a string of lights, lanterns, railings, trees and bushes,
rocks or small boulders, a jacuzzi, a swing, a wishing pool, statuary, floodlights, candles, music speakers in faux rocks, fountains, a hammock.
The possibilities are endless and have no limits other than your unique creativity and budget. Consider it a work in progress and try to add something new every year.
You'd be amazed at how quickly and inexpensively you can start with some amazing results.
