Interior Redesign for Client's Townhouse, Laguna Niguel, California
This client asked for help in the following areas: a
color consultation, a redesign of her living room and a redesign of her
bedroom. I was there from 9:00 AM until 4:30 PM, during which time I gave her
an hour color consult, we rearranged all of the furniture in her living room
(one of the more difficult layouts I have encountered), rearranged most of her
accessories and hung up the art, then rearranged most of the furniture in her
master bedroom, giving ideas and direction regarding color, pattern, balance,
future purchases and so forth.
The Client's Living Room
One of the more difficult rooms I have ever had to arrange, the problem arose
in the way the townhouse had been designed by the architect. Even though a
partial wall had been removed previously by the client, which had been
positioned only about a foot or two from the fireplace, the position of the
fireplace made the room almost impossible to arrange to feature it while
keeping the rest of the space balanced. After "playing" with the
arrangement for a while, I was finally able to resolve the problem.
This client possessed some absolutely beautiful and uniquely different
furnishings. Many of them were very rustic and weathered. Some were brand new
and very contemporary and informal. The art the client loved was Tuscan and
European. What fun it was to work with these unusually wonderful pieces and
pull the whole look together. Artwork and a number of large plants were
suggested as future acquisitions.
As part of the consultation and redesign, it was my responsibility to instruct
the client on future purchases that were needed to really finish the room
completely. This client needed more art (and bigger art) and many, many more
plants. Her goal was to create an environment that made one feel as if the
outdoors had come inside. Suggestions for color, style, pattern, size, height
and purpose were given, such as area rugs, plants, artwork, upholstery, stains
and paint.
The Client's Bedroom
The client had a narrow, long bedroom. At one end was the bed, long closet and
window. At the other end was a patio glass door, and a beautiful wooded chest,
armoire and chest of drawers, along with a very unique wood/wrought iron desk.
The difficulty arose in how to make this separate section feel full yet not out
of balance. But after some careful thought, the solution was forthcoming.
Moving the desk to the opposite corner in the alcove area was a key component
in bring this area to completion. A grouping of art the client had just
purchased added another element of interest for the narrow panel of wall
between the two areas. A framed beveled mirror, new bedspread and pillows were
suggested to complete the look. The client was very pleased with the end
result.
TESTIMONIAL
At the end of the day, here is what Desiree had to say: "I am extremely
happy with the redecoration of my living room. Due to it's odd set-up, it was
very difficult to arrange the furniture to make the room look appealing and put
together. Now, not only is it appealing and put together, it is perfect to
entertain as well as make the most of the features of the room. Barbara and her
assistant were wonderful to work with and they worked with my style rather than
try to make me conform. Thank you. - Desiree K."
